Shopify vs WooCommerce vs OpenCart: Which Ecommerce Platform Should You Choose?

Choosing an ecommerce platform is one of the most consequential decisions you’ll make for your online store. Shopify, WooCommerce and OpenCart are three of the most widely used options, and each suits a different type of business. Here’s an honest comparison from an agency that builds on all three.

Shopify

Shopify is a fully hosted platform: Shopify runs the servers, handles security and PCI compliance, and keeps the software updated. Stores launch quickly, the checkout is excellent, and the app store covers almost any feature you might need. For many retailers that reliability alone justifies the cost.

The costs are the thing to understand properly. There’s the monthly subscription, transaction fees unless you use Shopify Payments, and app subscriptions that quietly stack up as your store’s needs grow — it’s common for a mature store’s app bill to exceed its platform bill. Customisation beyond what themes and apps allow is also more constrained than on open-source platforms, and leaving Shopify later means migrating. Our Shopify web design service covers builds, theme work and Shopify SEO.

WooCommerce

WooCommerce turns a WordPress site into an online store, and it powers more stores worldwide than any other platform. Because it’s open source, you own everything: the site, the data and the customer relationships. There are no platform transaction fees, and the WordPress ecosystem means your store, your blog and your SEO all live in one place — a real advantage if content marketing is part of how you sell.

The trade-off mirrors WordPress generally: you’re responsible for hosting, updates and security, and a badly configured WooCommerce store can be slow. Built and maintained properly, it’s fast, flexible and extremely cost-effective, which is why it’s our default recommendation for stores that want growth without per-month platform ceilings.

OpenCart

OpenCart is a dedicated open-source ecommerce platform — lighter than WooCommerce because it isn’t built on top of a general-purpose CMS. It’s quick, capable with large catalogues, free of platform fees, and straightforward for staff to run day to day. We’ve built and supported OpenCart stores for years, including some of our longest-standing client sites.

Its ecosystem is smaller than Shopify’s or WooCommerce’s, so some features that are an app install elsewhere are a development job on OpenCart, and finding experienced OpenCart developers is harder. It rewards businesses that have (or hire) a reliable development partner.

Cost comparison in practice

  • Shopify: predictable monthly costs that grow with your store — subscription, apps and possibly transaction fees. Cheapest to launch, often the most expensive to run at scale.
  • WooCommerce: higher up-front build investment, low running costs — hosting, maintenance and only the paid extensions you genuinely need.
  • OpenCart: similar shape to WooCommerce — investment in the build, minimal ongoing platform costs, with development time as the main variable.

Which is best for SEO?

All three can rank well. WooCommerce offers the deepest SEO control thanks to the WordPress ecosystem — full command of content, metadata, structured data and site architecture. Shopify covers the essentials well but keeps some technical decisions (like URL structure) in its own hands. OpenCart sits between the two and benefits from an experienced developer configuring it properly. In all three cases, the store’s content, speed and authority matter far more than the badge on the platform.

Thinking of switching platforms?

Stores outgrow platforms, or discover their running costs too late. Migrations are very doable — products, customers, orders and search rankings can all be carried across when the move is planned properly, with redirects protecting the SEO you’ve built. That planning is the difference between a smooth move and a traffic cliff, and it’s exactly what our ecommerce platform migration service exists for.

Our recommendation

  • Choose Shopify if you want the fastest route to a dependable store and are comfortable with ongoing platform costs and its customisation limits.
  • Choose WooCommerce if you want ownership, deep SEO control and low running costs, especially if content marketing is part of your strategy.
  • Choose OpenCart if you want a fast, fee-free dedicated store platform and have a development partner you trust.

The honest answer is that the right platform depends on your products, your team and how you plan to grow. If you’d like that answer for your own store, talk to our ecommerce team — we build on all three, so the recommendation you get is based on fit, not on what we happen to sell.
